Alice in wonderland

With the imminent release of Tim Burton's Alice in wonderland it didnt take long to be approached for and Alice style shoot. So taking the raw and simple ideas from the Lewis Carol stories we set out to a local woods for the first part of the shoot. Once the model had stopped sinking in the muddy ground we used a combination of natural sunlight and supplimentary flash to get the images. Using the Natural surroundings and then bringing a large mirror into the mix (which was very heavy) we tried to creat a feel of Alice before she entered wonderland, leaving out the rabbit hole as this would involve a lot more resources than i had at my disposal.

After she has entered wonderland it is not all it seems, it is dark, grungy, rundown with warnings and messages sprayed on the walls, for this we used our favorite rundown mill, where we could get the dark and eerie feel that was needed for the second part of our shoot. Using a compination of odd camera angles and filters we try and unnerve the view to make them feel as nervous and confused as Alice is.

Back in time

The 50's, a time for pin ups a time when views started changing, and one that we tried to re create with a 50s style pin up shoot. In a slight diversion from weddings and portraits, we set up a wash-o-rama shoot in a laundrette, to be let down at the last minute by the laundrette owners.

Never one to be put off I quickly set up the studio and lights and we moved to the magazine style pin up shoot. I had two wonderful models wo fit the roles perfectly and we got some great shots from it all.

All sounds good but a few friends and myself decided to have a try at light painting.

The theory is simple, using torches, light sources etc, you run a slow shutter on the camera and literally paint with the light.

This was our first attempt at this and the results have been quite good so far. I think with a little planning we could come up with something amazing.

Winter Wonderland

Well the snow fell, then it fell a bit more, we had Christmas and yup it fell a bit more, a nightmare for most adults, excellent fun for children and a photographers dream.

First of all with all the wonderful weddings we have had recently I have not had much time to get out and take some personal photography, so seizing the opportunity I took the camera over to west Yorkshire near blubberhouses to catch this glorious sunset. The show was ankle deep and by the end of it i was freezing. It was well worth it though.

Next on the list was a portrait shoot of a horse. This was requested at short notice for a Christmas present. As the old luvvies saying goes "never work with children and animals" this made me want to do the shot more and as i am already a children's photographer i had half the equation out of the way.

So on a cold Sunday morning I packed the gear up and set of out to the stables where i was greeted with wonderful scenery and lashings of fresh snow.

The horse was amazingly well behaved and almost like it was posing for me, the snow also started falling again giving it a very christmassy feel.

So first horse portrait in the bag it was time for a break.

Christmas day was the standard fun and mayhem which ensues when you have children. Too many toys and not enough sleep. It was fantastic.

After all of that was a portrait shoot for a young couple as a gift to each other.

So in between Christmas and new year I managed to get through the snow to their house for the photo shoot, what a lovely couple, both very nervous but they did fantastically.

Now I was on a roll, so putting a message up on Facebook I asked if any Brides would like to have a chance to wear their dress again and have some shots done in the snow, the response was fantastic but it was all a case of timing. In the end I chose Amanda Atkinson my Bride from April 09 who also went on to win the Living TV show Four Weddings. So another Sunday morning and braving the snow yet again, with a bag full of props we set out to Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham for a Snow Bride shoot. I could not fault Amanda's bravery, as i was wrapped up in a fur lined coat with gloves and a hat and Amanda was just in a veil and a strapless wedding dress, hugging trees and running through snowy woodlands.

Snow keep on snowing is all i say, until next time. Cya

Zombies Everywhere! Some were even married!!

Morning broke on the 1st of november and no-one could prepare me for what i was about to witness, the day started as normal, my two boys were up too early, i had to watch cartoons and then It all changed!! After donning a blood stained shirt and my ripped suit i set off out with my wife and two friends to Manchester (the kids were with the inlaws) whereupon the undead were waiting for us, i had to think fast and using two cameras i quickly rattled off some shots, then preceded in the lift at the Ramada Jarvis to find a room full of ZOMBIES!!!

This was the worlds first double zombie wedding and i was honored to be the official photographer for both weddings. It was all in line with Manchesters Zombie Aid 2, where everyone dresses up as a zombie and we walk the streets of manchester for 2 reasons, all entry fees are donated to charity and to break a world record!

Great fun was had and i have never seen anything like it before.The couples had thier official wedding at the Ramada Jarvis and then they had a blessing by a vampire priest in front of a crowd of over a thousand zombies at the Printworks later in the afternoon.

Then the zombie walk started, which took us through manchester and into an Empty Arndale centre where the undead did some window shopping (or licking from some).

Sadly we did not break the world record but there is always next time.

Urban Exploration

Getting some ideas together for a personal project involved a little bit of urban exploration or urbexing for short.

An old abandoned mill is the setting, getting the light is the harder part and also trying not to fall through the floor at any point :)

It was a great visit and my guide was brilliant, next to realise my ideas.

Every now and then i get a few spare minutes to get some personal photography done, yesterday was an extra bonus of my son being off school, so dressed in his new skinny jeans, grunge shirt and canvas trainers i took him on a photo shoot. Now the one thing you will need to know about Evan is, you cannot pose him, he loves his pic being taken but he has his own style and his own way of posing, the only thing i can do is put him in the right spot.

We chose a spot under a motorway bridge to get the "urban" feel to the shots and only using available light we proceeded to have a bit of fun with the photo shoot, of course he had his accessories of furry hat and sunglasses so they were both put to good use. Now I just need his younger brother to get a bit older and i can have the two of them on shot. :)

Lifestyle on a grand scale

A lifestyle portrait shoot is normally one photographer and one family. What about if you took 6 family's and 15 children plus 2 photographers??? Mayhem?? absolutely but of the best kind. The premise of the day was Fun and that was our aim, let the kids runabout, explore the woods at Townley hall in burnley and Donna Mills (ClickClickBang Photography) and myself run around and capture the key moments while interacting and having fun ourselves. Ok it was raining at the beginning but there is one thing i know and that is, children don't care :)

Will we do it again?? Hell yes!

Another photoshoot was wrapped early this afternoon, it was for Talking Heads salon in Brierfield, after numerous problems securing the right models the ones we had from the begining of the idea shone through amazingly. One was even willing to go from shoulder length hair down to a fairly short crop. Thanks to every one who was there and hope you all had a great day.

Day at the woodland Festival

Every year in Burnley there is a woodland festival where plenty of events take place including, re enactments by the sealed knot, wood carving and many other attractions, this year seemed to be bigger and better, although we had the kids in tow and Evan our eldest was more interested in obtaining a plastic sword than anything else, i did get a few shots (mainly family ones) but there was one guy in the viking encampment whot was just too photogenic to miss. Very intense stare and i think the kids were a little worried by him and i think i was too lol.

A weekend off is never a weekend off, it was our friends little girls 1st birthday party today and so we all met up at letcliffe park in Barnoldswick and of course i took the camera to capture the Event.

I even took part in the Dads spacehopper race - just got pipped to the post darn it. lol

That will be me on the right (yellow hopper) it looks like we are chasing the small child down in some kind of strange prisoner style event but we were racing lol

On a wonderful and rare occasion I went with my family to Chester Zoo yesterday and it was fab, the two boys soaked it all up and loved it, but once again i think we still missed some bits. My poor wife would not enter the "twilight zone" as there are live flying bats in there and i must say that in comparison to the bats we get flying around near our house, the size of these things was a surprise to me as well, but cool no less. Evan our eldest thought it was excellent and scary at the same time, especially when one or two bats came within touching distance as they flew over.

Of course i took the camera to try some animal shots which are not generally my forte but its always worth practicing.

9 Families and 1 Bride

Well another succesful Fun Photo Day is in the bag, and what a great day, 9 Families with a total of 17 children, 1 dog, 1 wedding couple and 1 Bride in her dress :)

Once again everyone had a great time including myself and 1 dad who was a bit shocked at my request for a topless shot until he realised it was with his baby as well lol.

I also had a visit from fellow photographer Donna Mills who managed to also get the full family topless for a fantastic shot (somthing which i dared not have asked the mother).

All I can say is I am looking forward to the next one.

For the keen eyed among you, you may have noticed the website looks a tiny bit different. That will be the updated logo and the new colours :)

After Designing the Logo for Studio 2 I thought i would go back and have another look at my logo.

Not wanting to just settle with one, oh no i have sectioned of the business with according logos (ok ok they are not that much different but it might make a difference)

A fellow photographer from Essex post a question on the SWPP forum yesterday asking advice on Logos for their website, many people responded with their own interpritations so I thought i might as well have a dabble, seeing as i designed my own logo.

I designed it and posted it up on the forum, later that night i recieved a very pleasant e-mial to say that they loved my design and would like to use it (with a few adjustments). I made the changes and now it is up and in use on their site. :)

at the PENCIL Exhibition

Last night i was honored to be part of the PENCIL art and photography exhibition, hosted at the Sanctuary rock bar in Burnley. It featured the work of 15 local artists and photographers, all with different outlooks and all with fantastic pieces of work.

I decided to show 11 pieces and these were recieved wonderfully, by the other exhibitors and public alike.

It was a hard slog to get everything ready in time but ultimately it was worth it.

Thanks to Francesca for organising everything and i am looking forward to the next one.

On Living

Well you never know but I could soon be on Living TV as they were filming at the wedding I was photographing on easter weekend. I will admit it was very odd but a good experience, firstly trying to capture shots which did not have TV cameras in them and secondly watching a Reality TV crew in action. I cannot give anymore details at this time, but i will post when the episode is going to air.

I-dophotos childrens portraits were at Runamok in haslingden last weekend with an introductory photoshoot entiled "Fun photo day" and from the feed back received it was a roaring success.

Our ethos for the childrens photo shoot was a simple one. Make it fun. With this in mind we packed up our gear, including feather boas, toys, hats, bunny ears and some great music, set up at Runamok and waited for willing parents to bring in thier children, everyone had a laugh and the children really enjoyed it as you can see in our portraits gallery.

Feedback on the day consited of "good prices" "wonderful to have the photographer so involved with the action" and "when are you back?"

With that in note we are talking to Runamok about a revisit sometime in June, so watch this space and keep an eye on the website for more news.

Getting ready for the challenge

DJST hairgroup asked me to take some photographs for the L'oreal Colour challenge, this was another studio session in the salon, this time we had to get the lighting to show off the hair and the style so opting for a white uncluttered backdrop we got to work. 5hrs later we had the shots in the bag, with numerous hairstyles and colourings in between.

Now the salon need to choose the images they want and then you can see the rest of the results on the website very soon

Busy busy busy and a happy new year

Yes i know i am late in wishing you all a happy new year but i do have reasons (honest).
Firstly things are changing in the I-DOPHOTOS camp, as we start a new year we start with fresh new ideas and one of them is actually harking back to the past.
We are looking into providing the Retro chic of an actual traditional wedding photo album.
These are the ultimate in statement to show all your friends. We are starting with the parent books as an option and gauging how well these would be introduced into our range.
Secondly we are or have now moved into fashion and commercial photography also with projects for Surestart burnley completed and an upcoming fashion shoot for the L'oreal colour contest on behalf of DJST hair salon.
So the website will start to have a wonderfully varied look. Including my normal everday photography.
As from feb the 10th i will also know how my photographs have done in the Finals of the Digital camera magazine photographer of the year. So fingers crossed.

Children, music, cooking and babies!!!

Day 1 of my week long project for the Ightenhill childrens centre in Burnley. It's been quite a fun day today with some of the children literally running way from "the strange man with the camera" while others have taken a shining to me and want to be in every shot lol.

This is a project for a Surestart centre in Burnley where we are trying to capture the essence of what the centre is all about using actual centre users, Mums, Dads, Children. These will then be printed and framed in 10 frames to be shown throughout the centre possibly adding on quotes from the people in the picture. Other pictures will also be used on the website to help explain exactly what the centre has to offer.

It's a wonderful project and i am glad i was offered to partake in it.

I will keep you all updated on how it went once it is all finished.

It's HUGE!!!

The banners for the fashion shoot at DJST hairgroup have gone into the window today and they are huge! It was a big shock as i was driving past to see them as i wasn't expecting them to be printed this fast.

This is the biggest i have ever seen my work to date so to say i am chuffed is an understatement, now imagine one of these as a bridal shot? lol

Big thanks to all the models and to Dale and Simon for making the shoot a great day.

Where has the time gone???

I suspect you are thinking that it has been a bit quiet on here recently? Well you would be right! Firstly i do apologise but it has all been worth it.

Not only do we have a new set of wedding packages to offer with album upgrades and larger prints but I-DOPHOTOS have expanded into Fashion and Commercial photography, so now we can offer more than just weddings and portraits.

So why has it taken so long to add a post i hear you asking??
Well apart from all of the above. I had the Exhibition extended for an extra 3 weeks due to its popularity so i would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who attended.

On the back of this though i have been in talks with a reputable coffee shop chain plus a local coffee shop and a few other organisations about having my work on display so all of this has been eating up my time.

Dont worry though service is now resumed and weekly updates should be wending there way here once again.

What a weekend!!

Trip to wales on Saturday night ready for a wedding on Sunday, but this is not any wedding, not only is the bride sporting a wonderful strawberry red dress, not only is the groom and all the men being picked up in a stretch Hummer, the strangest thing is, I am not lead phototographer!!! lol.
This is where the reigns had been handed to friend, fellow photographer and wedding tog first timer, Si Moore and believe it or not I could take some leafs out of his book. He secured the booking a long time ago now and over the course of time he has done an unbeliveable amount of preparation, way and above the normal, down to getting a colour sample of the dress pro scanned with readings for colour matching when he is processing the shots. Phenominal!
He was nervous as hell the night before but on the day you would never had been able to tell it was his first wedding shoot. I may even get him on the books and branch out into North Wales ;)

Final Touch's

Well the day draws closer, the exhibition is on Monday (18th Aug) and in true style i have just ordered the last 2 prints today, nothing like last minute for me! lol.
I have not seen the mounted work yet but i am assured it is looking good so fingers crossed.
May get Kirsty onto the local rags for a press release and see if that generates any extra interest :)
I will let you all know how it went.

Nerves are hitting

As the date towards my first exhibition draw closer i am starting to feel the nerves, questions such as, will it be ok? Will people like it? Will I like it? They are all running through my head and i still have 12 more pieces of work to print -eek!!

I have designed the flyers with the peliminary dates though so if you live in and around Burnley you may well see one or two of these dotted around

Nowhere in particular, I have just been a bit busy sorting shots out for my first exhibiton!!! Yes you read that right, my FIRST exhibition, to say i am pleased is an understatement! I have to select 20 shots from my collection to encompass the idea behind my book "Blackburn and beyond", which is easier said than done. It is being held at the MPA gallery in burnley in thier C-space, which is essentially the corridor to the main Exhibition, but the way i see it is you will see my work on the way in and on the way out and we all have to start somewhere :)

Well folks i think thats it, british summer time is offically over, just in time for the height of the wedding season of course (bring your brollies) although its not as bad as you think for 1 you wont be getting your heels stuck in the grass, your dress will stay mud free and you wont have one of the little ushers or bridesmaids running off down to the bottom of the grounds just as the group shot is about to be taken with dad and uncle john chasing after them to fits of gleeful laughter from the young escapee.
Indoor shots can be great fun its just getting uncle tony and the groom away from the bar and TV (normally with that days match showing) long enough for the shots :)

So perhaps i am showing my age but we never had a prom when we left school but it seems to be all the rage now and with that I have my first prom portrait shoot to do on Tuesday (results to be shown later) and then i realise to potential of this service where as in america the schools have yearbooks and what a great service this is. It is something i do wish i had, to be able to just get the yearbook off the shelf and have a laugh at how bad we all looked and remember the good times.
So from next year I-dophotos will be offering a prom/yearbook service to the local schools around here (prices to be arranged) so please contact me if you are interested

Never the best....

....weather for a photographer is it??? Rain. dull skys, 60mph winds and a brides worst nightmare!!

But as always there are contingency plans and these consist of the simplest of things, doing your homework. All venues are visited first and locations are found for outdoors and indoors because living in england you never know what the weather may bring and the last thing a bride needs is a photographer who turns around and says "er um sorry i had lots of plans for outdoor shots but now its raining i am not sure what to do!" I will admit it is the biggest challenge because most venues will not have the space indoors for the big group shots or the wonderful vista stlye backdrops that the outside will give you. But unlike cricket rain will never stop play and your day is still THE most important thing, and at I-DOPHOTOS we will always remember this.

In the meantime you can always enjoy the calmness of a blue sky with one of my recent personal shots

While it is hard in this economic crisis to be thinking about the cost of a wedding and what savings you are going to have to do the one thing i would say is do not ditch the photographer! Now i can see your thinking "well you would say that it's your business".

The problem is your day goes by in such a blur that you can barely remember anything, at the evening function you hardly see your new Husband/Wife due to all the people you want to get round and talk to so the best way to help jog those memories are the photographs.
I have had so many couples say to me on the proof day, "wow i really don't remember that bit" and (to their partner) "gosh do you remember that?"

This is where the importance of an album comes in, yes you see other photographers offering a CD only service but lets be honest are you really going to get them all printed and put them in an album yourself? or is it going to be viewed on the computer a few times and then get put in a drawer?

At least with an album put together by a professional photographer the day is laid out and you can just take it off the shelf and look at it anytime or even take it to relatives who have decided not to join the computer age!

So if you are thinking that you cant afford the photographer just remember that pound for pound over all the money that's spent it's these moments captured that will last you a lifetime.

Stuffed Dads

How many dad's like myself went out for a meal today? I imagine you all stuffed yourselves stupid and are regretting it now lol.
We went to a carvery at the Rose and Bowl in stacksteads and my god, i have never seen such a good spread it was all far too tempting all i can say is thank goodness you guys don't have this at your wedding receptions, the guests would not be able to pose for photos afterwards lol :)

Back over at waterfoot today (and no we didnt buy a crab :) bought a lobster instead) and just off the car park was a play park so Evan wanted to go on, i will say it was the most abismal park i have ever seen, it had a slide and what used to be swings and er....thats it! Plus it was surrounded by the most awful mesh fence, but i used it to my advantage to get a shot which makes a statement on society (sorry getting heavy i know) about the loss of youth and the fact that children cannot enjoy themselves as much as we used to.

Anyway enough from me here is the shot

I can do nice portraits as well lol :)

Take the scenic route....it's worth it!

Motorways, pah who wants to get there on time, off the beaten track is the way you never know what you will find (normally a private road with a farm at the end admittedly). Just off the A6 to Penrith i saw some water so i turned off and came across a nice little tranquil spot which i will revisit and perhaps use as a "trash the dress" location for a willing bride

you can see it now, bride on the bridge looking over with the wind blowing, lets hope someone goes for it eh??

Eye spy crabs

Ok perhaps not the first thing you are going to think of with a wedding photographer but i thought i would put it on here anyway.
While i was visiting clients over in waterfoot i stopped off at a local aquatics shop (Kirsty(my wife) has a fish tank) and whilst oohing and ahhing at all the "purty" fish i spied something i have never seen, little crabs for the fish tank!! Brilliant!! So 1 purchase later we put them in the tank and watched in anticipation of what they woud get up to.
What we really watched was the little crabs scuttle off and find hiding places so we cant see them!
Yup a great and exciting purchase there ;)

Never mind, on a plus note the couple have just mailed me and they are really happy to use I-dophotos for their wedding next August.

Egremont, cumbria. Wheres that? I hear you say. well its a long way from me i will tell you, the drive there has is advantages though, and great scenery including a place called Corney fell. So i had to stop for some shots, all well and good but it was blowing a gale i could barely stand up never mind the camera and tripod ;)

but as you can see it was well worth it.

Obviously the picture is up for sale on my website and it would look great in a wide black frame - hint hint lol

BBQs and high winds

Today i had a day off so i thought it would be nice to get the family round for a BBQ.
BBC weather=sunny, check

BBQ clean? - check

Gas in the bottle?- check

Enough meat to create a lifsize version of ayers rock? - check

LETS COOK!!!

and then the wind started!!!
all the kids went indoors because it was too cold but we perservered (as only brits do)
the plates decided to take a trip to the back of the garden, the parasol decided it had had enough of being down and opened itself up and any cooked meat which did not contain bits of grass cuttings or bits of tree went cold very fast.

Did we have a good time???

Hell yeah.

Although it would have been easier working at a wedding ;)
